Will there be a way to buy fruits and vegetables without this plastic coating that can't be washed off? Yikes.

We live in urban Toronto with a tiny backyard; for the last few years, we grew only tomatoes. This year, we will add zucchini and lettuce. I love growing my own food, though the seeds are probably GMO. Are there places to buy certified non GMO seeds. I would be willing to pay a premium, even though I live in Toronto, Canada.

Thanks for your article.

Memo to BGates: Nobody asked you for a food coating that can't be washed off. And nobody asked you or anyone else for an experimental injection that destroys their immune system. Why not bug off and go back to computer-coding. Oh, and by the way, people are not programmable. It might take some folks a while to re-discover that, but they will. So take your food coatings and put them where the sun don't shine.

Yes, I keep telling them to leave me the hell alone. Someone said the other day it was Baal gHates. Apt description. There is a farmer's market in Weiser that is starting to thrive. Very happy about that.

This magic coating sounds as though they have invented a use for their waste by product.

....Samantha someone kindly remarked to me that i need to eat more seeds, but added that at least i'm nuts already so i've saved a fortune in that respect!...adopting this logic theres perhaps more than a grain of truth in the old bromide 'you are what u eat'...then again down our way someone who strove to disallow their happiness or contentment until they had acquired at any cost (usually (in) human)much more than their necessary share of the world's goods used to be identified as 'a hungry ###..' ...they were cussed in that they they were regarded as anomalous entities!

To avoid disappointment when starting your first veg garden I would suggest a hardy veg mix that is bug resistant naturally and if rotated with manure addition are low work, high yield.

I live off a staple of potatoes, broad beans, parsley, garlic, spring onions and beetroot. I I leave one or two plants to go to seed for future planting.

This gives a good mix of carb/ pulse energy, vitamins and antibiotics.

Anything else you then grow that survives is a bonus.

To complete the energy cycle look up humanure. If you turn your nose up, you really are not ready for the hardship of honest living.

If you can't grow hardy veg (or a similar substitute according to your location) and look after a few chicken's for eggs you really are in trouble!

Note: plant your garden before you run out of food.
