I wish I had Scalia's ability to so readily separate person and idea; or, I wish I had more of it than I do, since I don't think he's fully right about this.
Hi Samantha! I thought it would be better if I commented further here... ;)... per our previous discussion... As I said... Your stated opinion here has struck a familiar cord with me as I have always maintained that I do judge other people, but I do so based upon what I perceive to be their quality of being... and the perception that forms my judgement of others is not only based upon my personal interactions with others, but much more so on their interactions that I observe on a wider scope.
Absolutely Anthony, I do the same. The thing is we also must make quick judgments of others based on little real information. In this instance, I’ll use the example of who can date our young teen daughters. My own girls are old enough to make decisions on their own, but as mid teens, I always had to make quick (almost snap) judgments of boys they had an interest in.
I can’t say I was always right, but it had to be done. I think the same goes when we decide on a new job -- whether the boss will be a good one with integrity and many other situations. It gets complex, but it must still be done.
I am reminded, if I am remembering it right, this conversation with jonathan pague on jordan peterson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ43i5nKuZk where he talks about how the discerning type of judgement is baked in to genesis.
Yes! I love Jonathan P (and JBP) so very much. Our whole family does in fact. Have you watched any of The Meaning Code videos on YouTube, hosted by Karen Wong? They are incredible. She’s had Jonathan Pageau and Wolfgang Smith, PhD, and MANY other deep thinkers along with Dr. Michael Clarage who is here on Substack.
I admit, when I stumbled upon her, I was hesitant to give her a chance BECAUSE she’s a female. I know that must sound strange coming from a female, but so many women who have popular channels on YouTube and elsewhere have made me quite wary.
If you haven’t watched any of her videos, I encourage you to do so and you WILL NOT be disappointed.
Thank you for your comment. I’m watching the JBP video you linked right now.
It’s incredibly profound. By the way, I JUST finished the video you linked above. Absolutely stunning. My husband is going to watch it with me tonight. I’ll get almost 4 hours of this treasure! Thank you, Gary!

I wish I had more of his ability as well; not so much because I believe he’s wrong on certain things, but only so I could be wiser in my reasoning.
What things of Scalia’s do you not agree with? I ask this with honest innocence because I only know of a few of his rulings.
