STarting to grow in doors or on the patio, where I can control the water (filtered lol boiled with lots of zeta potentials!). Sort of thinking if you want to get any good stuff its going to be growing for you in your home, because the PTBs want you eating da bugs... and yes, they WILL take out the farmers. If I'd the space and money I'd be laying in a 30 year supply of foods... take me right up to the end, LOL.
Exactly, growing your own food (at least what you can) is where it's at. As to your question about water control, Unagnu, I'd say grow your plants on your outdoor patio, if possible, so you can water out there each day, or two times a day, whatever is necessary. If you want to grow herbs inside, in a pot next to a sunny window, for example, I'd just put a dinner plate or a shallow dish of some sort under each pot. That should do it unless you're overwatering.
Yeah, there's no WAY my family is eating zee bugz. I wrote a post a few months ago about storing your own emergency food and the method makes it last for years.
Freeze dried been experimenting. Jared or canned with broth/water is better I think, as it will provide the water you might lack when they start rationing you out of existence, which they are VERY likely to do. Black, white, asian color isn’t where that’s at … its all about numbers! How many can we kill in one fell swoop…
We just weaned calves from their mothers using the moon as a timing guide and it appeared to have much less stress on the calves doing it this way. Sounds like we need to pay more attention to the moon!!
Hi Elizabeth, I read something about that when I was researching about planting. So cool to get first hand experiential evidence of its working from you. Yes, we need to pay far more attention to our cosmos: moon, sun, various stars and planets. So much to learn.
By the way, your encyclopedia has been my addiction lately! It's such a fascinating read. My husband and I have been poring over it each weekend. I plan on writing some posts about the information in it when I have time. Things have been VERY busy on the homestead lately; hence, my tardy response. Thank you again!
I have no time for naysayers, either - they're the same ones who think that climate change is human-caused and all food should be processed for our safety. I just ignore them, until they try to infringe upon my fundamental rights :-)
Another great piece, Samantha - enjoyed the conversational tone, appreciated the knowledge. I, too, pick up a Old Famer's Almanac each year - we're close to a new one being released, if it has not been already ;-)
Thanks Stone and I agree completely. I just ignore the momos...that is, until I don't. You know what I mean. I've been looking for Old Farmer's Almanacs in thrift stores. Still haven't found one. I'd definitely like the one for this year. I'll search around for it.
Well written and thank you for sharing this. My wife is a Native American and speaks of her ancestors planting by the Moon.
I worked in manufacturing and aerospace, and talk often about the loss of institutional knowledge due to the Boomer retirements. What you are talking about is a far greater and a more profound loss.
Printed a hard copy of your post to add to my library. I will also look for copies of those old almanacs. I can’t empathize enough to people to build significant personal libraries of old books filled with old and lost knowledge. It’s going to be far more important than most people realize. Be your own Library of Alexandria.
Thank you for the kind words, Old Space Cadet. So cool about your wife. I would love to hear her stories.
I agree completely about being our own library. I really dislike electronic books. Being an avid reader, I like to hold onto something real and like to be able to revisit it easily any time I like.
The only thing electronic books are good for, in my opinion, is travel. For example, I can’t drag 10 books on a plane, but I can easily bring 10 electronic ones. But all the things we care about, we buy in hard copies. I print a LOT of things too. I just don’t trust that I’ll be able to find that information again, despite electronic “bookmarks.”
Electronic books can be changed and rewritten with every update, which supposedly is already happening. They can also be disappeared. As you said, nice for travel, but hard copy is best for your personal library.
Thanks for this, this is very informative!! I've recently found out about electro farming and have been using copper for plant growth. My next move is definitely planting in Moon phases. Thanks again and God Bless you and your family
Maybe it doesn't do much but it's hard to imagine it hurts anything either. Same goes for most of the advice in the old Farmer's Almanacs. Personally I'm more skeptical of modern agricultural science's poisonous advice and devastating consequences than old advice that may amount to a lot of superstition and placebo effects. One thing is for sure: it worked fine for centuries, and left later centuries with healthy people and healthy soil. First, do no harm.
As for globohomo's deranged technocratic schemes, yes, they can create a lot of problems for small commercial farms with impossible regulatory burdens and outright bans. But good luck to them on stopping home gardens. They keep trying to threaten people with mass surveillance (satellites and drones and HOA inspectors, oh my!) but just have a look at the war on drugs for perspective on how that's likely to go.
I agree Fukitol. If it helps, great (and I think it does, somewhat), but if it doesn’t make a difference, that’s fine.
Well, I’m sure you’ve heard what’s going on now in the UK. They’re requiring people to “register” their backyard chickens and other birds — even if a person has only one bird. Failure to do so results in a $500/day/bird fine and possible jail time. People over there are apoplectic, but the tyrannical creep has been going on a long time over there. It’s just more in-your-face now, so people are waking up.
As far as backyard gardens…they’re cooking up something to make it very difficult. Not sure what, but depending on the election, they’ll go for it.
Often the trick with these ridiculous unenforceable regulations is to not self-snitch. If you're in a dense suburban neighborhood some Karen is going to rat on you, but otherwise just quietly break the law. They don't have the resources or manpower to monitor people constantly. They rely mostly on voluntary compliance.
The trouble with a commercial operation is that unless you go full black market you're inevitably going to tie yourself into the system.
This can and will be stopped Gluck. A lot of us are demanding real whole food. We will not eat zee bugz! And fatty red meat and pasture raised eggs are all I will eat. No fake meat for me and my house!
Awesome, i didnt plant by the moon this season, my garden was so poor this year. Thankfully Felicia the garden girl did much better. So we did our usual bartering. Knowing and developing a community is going to be crucial!
We must both have food on our minds today! I love the old ways, after all, they needed to know how to cycle with the earth so they could eat. We have come so far from the beings we were meant to be and I certainly don't think it is progress in any way, shape or form. I think old cookbooks might just be a treasure as well. I have my grandma's coming to me from my mom.
I agree that we have lost connection with the rhythms of the earth. It may seem as if it’s not necessary in our tech-heavy world, but I think it’s more necessary than ever!
Your grandma’s cookbook is indeed a treasure. I have two old cookbooks from the 1040s that we found at thrift stores. I love them! They have so many tips and so much advice that we’ve lost.
Just seeing this Sadie! I’ve been out of the loop for a bit getting our house ready for the market. Still a long ways to go, but we have a little time. I hope to be back regularly now. We’ll see. 😬
Love the tips! I just transplanted Tat Soi yesterday, new moon just began. Is that right Samantha?
Hi Roman! Yes that's right. I love that we have the whole cosmos to guide us about such things.
Hi Samantha! Thanks. Have you ever heard of Sally Norton's book on oxalates, Toxic Superfoods?
I haven’t heard of that book, in particular, but I’ve been hearing a LOT about oxalates lately. If you recommend it, I’ll buy it!

And, I understand and agree with you, Unagnu.
Yes that’s fantastic! Freeze driers are too expensive for us at this point, but we have friends who have them and love them.
We just weaned calves from their mothers using the moon as a timing guide and it appeared to have much less stress on the calves doing it this way. Sounds like we need to pay more attention to the moon!!

only because they all been proven true…
Indeed!
I have a 1881 Household Cyclopedia book on pdf. How do I send it to you so you can share it with your readers if you approve?

Absolutely, Old Space Cadet! That’s precisely what I mean. Hard copies will be more valuable than gold.

I know it! But clever people (not me, of course) have ways.
Farmers Almanac loaded with all kinds of remedy's fishing hunting moon charts planting harvesting you name it
Yes! My parents used to consult the almanac for many things when I was a kid. I need to look into a subscription.
This can and will be stopped Gluck. A lot of us are demanding real whole food. We will not eat zee bugz! And fatty red meat and pasture raised eggs are all I will eat. No fake meat for me and my house!
Now if I could just get a good tip on keeping the squirrels from devouring my garden. I will give the moon phase planting tips a try this fall.

Informative
Thanks so much, Emilio! Things have been so busy lately and I haven't been publishing very regularly, but I will (hopefully) now.
You're welcome always God bless you and your family
And same to you, Emilio.
Thanks
