Nice article! It seems to me, too, that Harari is arrogant. I leafed through his book, and it looks like he shared his personal opinion rather than citing legitimate sources of knowledge.

I think AI can significantly help people in many areas. Nevertheless, we don't have to develop a wrong opinion about AI because people like Harari make stupid statements emphasizing their ignorance, such as the idea of writing a holy book with AI.

That would be holy only to people for whom AI is God.

With the dawn of the digital age (which was the 70s, not the 90s) the people that “produced” the culture that would become the 21st century were pot smokers and people dropping acid. They were the early tech-heads and “geeks” developing computers and computing systems, operating systems etc. it’s a culture of information and [uninformed] intuition more than one of rational thought. Information is not wisdom but it imitates it. I think that’s why we are a culture that shuns knowledge and timeless wisdom--it doesn’t fit the paradigm of “information is king.”

What an astute observation, Adventurer! I actually shared this with my husband this evening because I wanted him to see a cogent perspective on these issues. Thank you!

> He hopes AI can create “unified religions that are actually correct.”

That's just another occurrence of the Optimization Myth. Greenspan believed (or at least seemed to believe) that monetary policy can be perfectly optimized, Harari believes brainwashing policy can be perfectly optimized.

In reality, over-optimizing when dealing with stochastic systems leads to fragility – when it breaks down, it does so spectacularly.

I agree with you 100%, especially about how efforts to optimize soon become over-optimization, resulting in a brittle and fragile system.

It'll be great when our self-appointed mostly beneficient overlords of the WEF simplify existence to a single political organization, a single nation and a single religion ! ... Just wonder though, what will be the topics one " must always avoid at parties !" ?

Haha let’s see: topics to avoid would include ANYTHING even remotely smacking of distaste, distrust, and dislike for anything these overlords have put in place.

Be careful where you keep Harari’s book; it might catch on fire if it gets too close to a Bible.

Also I'm curious if you did low temperature pasteurization for your pickles. I haven't tried that yet and was wondering if it does make them more crunchy.

Expand full comment
Samantha Gluck's avatar

Hi Theodore -- We did not do low temp pasteurization. We used traditional water bath canning. But I’ll tell you why they are SO crispy.

We grow SO many cucumbers that it’s difficult to keep up with the canning before they get mushy. I stumbled across an older woman on YouTube who claimed she had the secret for storing cucumbers in the fridge (for WEEKS, even) and keeping them crispy. I thought it was probably bunk -- we had tried so many things. I watched anyway.

So you harvest your cucumbers and do NOT wash them. You wrap EACH one in a paper towel, twisting the ends so they’re nice and snug, but not tight. The twist loosens anyway. The. You store them all together (individually wrapped in one of those ubiquitous plastic grocery bags in the fridge. We put a loose square knot in the top of the bag.

We’ve stored them for at least two weeks when things get busy and they are JUST as firm and crunchy as the day we harvested them. We then can them as time allows. We’ve made more cases than EVER this year.

I wish I could remember the lady’s name. Maybe if I moon at my YouTube history, I can find it. If I do, I’ll post it here on Notes and tag you.

It probably won’t be tonight. DS is on his way to fetch me and take me to dinner! 😘

I wonder if the paper towel trick would work with beets and turnips too. I haven't found a good way to put them in the fridge without them getting soft and gross. I can't peel and cut everything at once.

Samantha Gluck's avatar

Haha pretty good assessment, Lawrence!

Expand full comment
Lawrence Butts's avatar

That is the first thing that came to my mind. Both my dad (was) and my younger brother still is a Narcissist. So I know quite a bit about how these personalities function. They will act like they care but they “really” have no empathy or feelings at all for anyone . So an empath (me) was in a family that was controlled by a narcissist. My mom was controlled by him and could do little to protect me. I was lucky to escape to college when I was 18. I didn’t even want to go back for Christmas. Kinda sad in a way. It bothered my mom but she couldn’t stand up to him. I hated the way she was belittled and mentally abused. That is what they do. It’s all about them and you are like a piece of dirt on their shoe. I can recognize them pretty quickly now. They can be very successful and rise to places of power and money. But inside they are hollow shells pretending to be humans so they can get their way.

Sorry to hear that Lawrence- at least the experience strengthened you. I believe they act this way because it's often to difficult to take a hard look at one's own life, and easier to focus on the problems of others, trying to play the hero. It was easier for Hitler to start WW2 than stare down a canvas.

Thanks.. mental illness just devastates lives and families everywhere. Yes both my dad and my brother (still to this day) can’t be told anything. They are ALWAYS right. Narcissists are always right. And they know everything. So self-reflection is not needed. They have everything figured out and YOU just need to listen and do what they want.

Lawrence, I’m an empath too and have also been around narcissists & Borderline people. I’m not willing to discuss it here, but you know what I mean. Yes I am fairly intact mentally. I can’t walk my dog in areas that have houses. I feel bad things coming out of them. It is not fun to be an empath. You know what I mean. I literally feel everything in the world. I catch and release flies that come in the house. No I don’t want kill them. I am faster than they are …LOL so I catch them and release them outside. I am really good at it.

Isn’t he so inspiring, Teresa? I could listen to his talks and watch his videos all day.

Yes Harari is a lost soul. When I began reading the book, I was all set to hate him. And, it’s true I quite despise him in the traditional sense; but, as I read his words, I realized that he is broken. OBVIOUSLY, this doesn’t excuse his evil AT ALL! I was just surprised at how deeply I was compelled to pray for him at the time!

I’m no saint, and haven’t prayed for him since, though I should. He’s just such a despicable character -- it makes it very difficult!
