How do you plan to cook the dried beans in emergency? Needs lots of water to soak and cook. Real wood campfire not an option for most situations. I will try beans in my Instant Pot which should take little electrical for a short cook time.

In an emergency, probably still using water and conventional methods. We preserve a LOT of food too, growing about 1500 to 2500 pounds each year. The best is that we’re going to move to our acreage in Idaho in about 18 months. Then we’ll greatly expand our growing, preserving, etc.

I’ve also been working on learning how to use other things that people typically throw out. It has been a journey, but so fun for the whole family.

My point was that the water supply can easily be tainted or unavailable. Other campfire or alternative heating sources will be small and limited.

I see what you’re getting at. Well, we’ll be moving to 70 acres in Idaho in about 12 to 14 months. The property has a deep well for water supply. I imagine that’s not easily contaminated and probably unlikely, since we’ll be around 45 minutes to an hour from the nearest (very) small town. However, should things go REALLY bad before we get out of where we are now (The Woodlands area north of Houston) contamination is a very real possibility. We have various methods for emergency water purification in that instance.

Wow! Great advice! I live deep in California Ag country and I have a good friend who preserve food and have given us much successful advice. She makes flour out of zucchini and other squash. it can be used for bread etc. and it stores very well. It can be done using the dehydration method or the freeze dried method. She has a freeze dryer so she uses it. I grew a lot of zucchini and I give it to her. In return she gives me a few pounds of flour for my keto diet. Thank you again!

That’s fascinating! We made flour from our mammoth sunflower stalks late this past spring. I never thought of using zucchini. We follow the Paleo diet, so mostly use alternative flours.

Ah, the kids leaving the nest….been there done that. So many emotions involved. It’s a bitter-sweet time.

I get how your feeling, especially in today’s times, but your headed to a great state.

Yes the empty nest is definitely bittersweet. I love seeing them making their own way, but I worry as well. We’ve got more still at home. The other 5 have (mostly) flown. Yep, I know it’s a great state, but the woke can infect ANY place, even a place like Texas (though it hasn’t managed that yet).

I won’t lie, I’m envious! Yes, I can only imagine getting anything built today. The vax damage is far and wide and finding real capable workers today is a serious challenge. Hell, today you can’t even get a delivery that’s not screwed up. But, the good news is that there are still many unvaxed out there and I pray you find them all for your building project.

I love the freeze dried ground beef, it’s a snap to cook with and I was amazed at how the steaks turned out. Wishing you the very Best!

Well thank you, Nanc. As I mentioned before, it will be at least 1.5 years before we move to our property. We must get our kids that are still in the nest off and flying. I’m super excited, but also terrified (in a way). We don’t know one another well at all, but, if you knew me, you would totally understand.

I’m glad I could save someone from what I’ve gone thru. There are other brands out there that I’m looking into. So, I’ll keep you posted.

What I did manage to freeze dry has been great though. My favorite was the ice cream, but it was so messy,you got to work super fast, lol 😂.

The meats turned out wonderful as did the veggies. I even did already baked pizzas and it made some nice crackers.

But HarvestRight are truly the worst.

Right now the only thing I can do with mine is fast freezing 🥶, which is kind of convenient.

Otherwise it would be in the trash.

Yes Nanc, please let me know what you find out about other brands. It’s a shame you can’t find ANYONE to work on the one you’ve got. I’m glad to know that what you DID freeze dry turned out great! We aren’t moving for awhile yet, but will be traveling out there periodically to get animal enclosures and growing areas and a barn set up. We won’t start building our house until we get there. THAT’s gonna be a challenge!

They are nice, but there is zero after sale service! I’m not kidding. They treat you like crap and offer no help when it breaks and they are known for this.

If you decide to go with them, get the Oiless motor, the oil ones are a total pain in the azz!

And expect to do a bit of learning.

This is not a plug and play item, lol 😂.

Yeah, I am SO glad I have discussed this with you. We probably won’t get one after all, especially not that brand, but probably not at all. We would be buying it for our business in Idaho when we move out to our property. There are always other solutions. You’ve been a GREAT help!

Yes, it was not cheap, and when they break, nobody knows how to fix them.

Mine is a HarvestRight. Plus there is a learning curve, especially with the motor.

But, when they work, they are fantastic!

I get great fresh foods from a local Amish co-op, I’ve been saving all my seeds from all those organic non gmo fruits and veggies. Got a beautiful freeze dryer, that’s on the blink and no one to repair them, which sucks! But I did get a ton of meats done before it died.

Perhaps; but the truth of the matter is that if they wish to kill us they'rte going to find a way, come hell or high water. Whether it be poisoning the air we breathe or rounding us up for FEMA camps complete with cyanide gas or guillotines while I understand the importance of storing things that only covers so much ground. I'd rather die than survive in the world the global goons have in mind for us all.

Inflation hasn't even really started yet as they are still printing money and the media blackout is stalling the enevitable unveiling that the West is bankrupt. Best, like you said, to buy now while there is stock available.

You can't eat gold or Bitcoin and people smart enough to grow food won't be trading with it or for it! 😂👍🌄

I found a great set of recipes called Emergency Meals in a Jar.

Basically they're dehydrated foods that you vacuum seal in a mason jar, and only require hot water to prepare. I've been experimenting with a few recipes from my garden produce that I dehydrated, and I think once I find good recipes my family enjoys I'll put together at least a few weeks worth of meals per person that I can rotate over the long term.
